How the League Takes Action
The League of Women Voters only takes action or advocates on issues where an official League position exists. These positions are not created quickly or casually—they result from a deliberate, transparent, and member-driven process.
League positions are developed through in-depth studies conducted at the National, State, or Local level. Each study thoroughly examines facts, perspectives, and potential impacts, with ongoing discussion of the pros and cons throughout the process.
As a study nears completion:
-
The study committee develops consensus questions based on the findings.
-
League members discuss and respond to these questions, engaging in additional pro-and-con dialogue.
-
Once member consensus is reached, the Board formalizes a League position based on that consensus.
It is this consensus statement—reflecting the collective judgment of our members—that becomes the foundation for League action and advocacy. Without an established position, the League does not take action.
This thoughtful, democratic approach ensures that every action we take is informed, intentional, and grounded in the voices of our members.
